Davenport, Iowa – Communities along the Iowa–Illinois border could face renewed winter travel disruptions as a late-January pattern increases the likelihood of accumulating snow across the Quad Cities and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, the Iowa–Illinois border region is included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, signaling a higher chance for one or more organized winter systems moving through the Midwest. The risk includes eastern Iowa and western Illinois, where colder air is expected to remain in place.

In the Quad Cities area, including Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline, temperatures trending below normal favor snow as the dominant precipitation type. That could lead to slick conditions along Interstates 74 and 80, as well as slower travel across Mississippi River bridges during periods of heavier snowfall.

Farther north and south along the border, snow may arrive in multiple rounds rather than a single storm, increasing the potential for cumulative impacts on U.S. Route 61, Illinois Route 92, and surrounding local roads. Gusty winds at times could further reduce visibility in open areas.

Iowa DOT and the Illinois Department of Transportation urge residents to monitor road conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and keep vehicles stocked with winter emergency supplies. With colder air expected to persist, any snow that falls may linger between systems.

More detailed timing and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with clearer impacts becoming available by early next week.
