Quad Cities, IL – Drivers and residents across Illinois are waking up to hazy, milky skies as wildfire smoke drifts into the region, reducing visibility and raising concerns about air quality through Sunday.

According to the US National Weather Service Quad Cities, satellite imagery shows high-altitude smoke moving in from the northwest, spreading across much of Illinois and eastern Iowa. The agency warns that some of this smoke will settle closer to the surface, potentially impacting visibility for motorists on major roadways such as I-74, I-80, and I-88. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with respiratory issues, are urged to limit outdoor activities until air conditions improve.

In the Quad Cities, including Davenport and Rock Island, residents may notice a noticeable haze and muted sunlight Sunday July 13. Smoke may also be apparent in areas stretching from Peoria to Chicago, as well as parts of southern Wisconsin. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping windows closed, using air purifiers if available, and staying indoors during periods of poor air quality.

This event, fueled by wildfire activity to the north and west, is similar to past smoke incursions seen during recent fire seasons. Air quality could fluctuate, so check updates regularly at airnow.gov.

Smoke and haze are expected to linger until Sunday evening. Additional advisories may be issued if air quality worsens.
