Des Moines, IA – A significant heat wave is expected to hit Iowa this weekend, with temperatures potentially surpassing 100 degrees in some areas. Forecasts indicate a surge in heat and humidity, particularly from Friday through Sunday. Highs will mainly be in the upper 80s to mid-90s, but with dew points reaching 70 degrees or higher, the heat index could climb to 107 degrees in some regions.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, residents should prepare for sweltering conditions. “With plenty of outdoor activities planned this weekend, be sure to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade,” they advised. “Check on the elderly and those without air conditioning, and limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning or evening outside of peak temperatures.”

The National Weather Service also emphasized the importance of heat safety. Recommendations include drinking plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, wearing light-colored clothing, and ensuring pets have adequate shade and water. It is crucial never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as temperatures can quickly become lethal.
