Fort Dodge, Iowa – Life-threatening heat is gripping much of western and west-central Iowa this weekend, with temperatures and humidity pushing heat index values as high as 110° through 9 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for 17 counties, including Emmet, Carroll, Cass, and Webster, as well as cities like Fort Dodge, Atlantic, and Emmetsburg. The prolonged high heat and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for outdoor workers, the elderly, and those without air conditioning.

The warning spans major travel corridors such as Highway 20 and I-80, where even brief vehicle breakdowns could become dangerous. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors, use air-conditioned spaces, drink water frequently, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Farmers and outdoor laborers are especially urged to reschedule work to early morning or late evening hours.

This marks the first major heat event of the summer for the region, with temperatures 10–15° above normal. Power usage may spike, increasing the risk of outages during peak hours.

The heat warning will expire at 9 p.m. Sunday, but additional advisories could be issued if the heat persists into Monday.
