Ottumwa, Iowa – Extreme summer heat will blanket south-central Iowa today, with dangerous heat index values nearing 105°F expected in Ottumwa, Centerville, and Bloomfield through 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a heat advisory remains in effect for Wapello, Appanoose, and Davis counties from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday. The combination of high temperatures and intense humidity will drive heat index readings into the triple digits, raising the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents across Ottumwa, Centerville, and Bloomfield are urged to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Hydrate frequently, remain in air-conditioned spaces, and check on elderly relatives or neighbors who may be vulnerable to the heat. Local cooling centers are open, and anyone without access to air conditioning should seek a public place to stay cool.
Road crews and outdoor workers in the region should take frequent breaks and watch for symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness or confusion. The advisory follows a week of rising summer temperatures across Iowa, with conditions today among the hottest so far this July.
The heat advisory is set to expire at 7 p.m., but additional warnings are possible if high temperatures persist. Stay tuned to local updates for further information.
