Des Moines, Iowa – Flash flooding is possible across much of central and west-central Iowa beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, as heavy rain threatens to overwhelm rivers, creeks, and drainage systems overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Flood Watch is in effect through Friday morning for 18 counties, including Polk, Dallas, Webster, Boone, and Madison. Intense rainfall could lead to runoff, pushing small rivers and low-lying areas beyond their banks.
Communities in Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Ames, Carroll, and Atlantic are urged to monitor conditions closely. Urban areas may see street flooding, while rural roads and low crossings could become impassable. Local emergency management recommends avoiding travel in flood-prone zones and securing outdoor items vulnerable to rising water.
Rainfall totals may vary widely across the region, but saturated soil from earlier storms has heightened the risk. Drivers are reminded: turn around, don’t drown — never attempt to cross a flooded roadway.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. Additional warnings or advisories could be issued if rainfall intensifies overnight.
