Shell Rock, Iowa – Minor flooding is set to impact Black Hawk, Butler, and Bremer counties starting late tonight as the Shell Rock River rises above flood stage, posing risks for streets and basements near the waterway.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the river stood at 11.6 feet as of 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and is projected to crest at 12.4 feet by Wednesday evening—just above the 12.0-foot flood threshold. This Flood Warning will remain in effect until Friday afternoon, with S Prairie St. and several basements close to the river especially vulnerable to flooding and seepage.
Residents in Shell Rock and surrounding communities should prepare for water on low-lying roads, especially overnight, and avoid any travel across flooded routes. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains critical, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Property owners along the river should move valuables to higher ground and ensure sump pumps are working. The Shell Rock’s current rise follows recent heavy rainfall, and minor flooding like this is typical for late July, though even small water level increases can bring significant impacts to homes and infrastructure.
The threat is expected to persist through Friday, with additional watches or warnings possible if rain continues. Updates will be posted on weather.gov/desmoines/water as conditions change.
