Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Flash flooding is already underway in parts of eastern Iowa this morning as slow-moving thunderstorms dump torrential rain across Linn, Benton, and Buchanan counties. Drivers in the Cedar Rapids metro area should expect water-covered roads and dangerous travel conditions through at least 12:45 p.m. Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Quad Cities, radar indicates 1 to 3 inches of rain have already fallen across Benton and southern Buchanan counties, with another 1 to 4 inches possible, especially in Linn County. Flash flooding is either happening now or expected to begin shortly in low-lying areas, urban streets, and small creeks.
Impacted areas include Cedar Rapids, Marion, Vinton, and Mount Vernon, as well as portions of Interstate 380 between mile markers 12 and 55. Cities such as Hiawatha, Fairfax, and Central City are also likely to see rapid water rise.
Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and stay alert for rising water near streams and underpasses. If water is covering a road, turn around—most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles.
The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 12:45 p.m., with additional advisories possible if heavy rain continues.
