Des Moines, Iowa – A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for parts of central Iowa as heavy rainfall continues to pummel the western portions of the Des Moines metro. From 2 to 4 inches of rain have already fallen, with additional rainfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour expected throughout the morning hours. Flash flooding remains a significant concern, particularly in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

According to the National Weather Service, the warning will remain in effect until 10:00 AM CDT Sunday, July 20, 2025. The heavy rain could cause flooding of roadways, underpasses, and small streams. The areas most impacted include Dallas Center, Adel, Waukee, Redfield, and Earlham. These locations could see rapid water accumulation and dangerous driving conditions.

Residents in these areas are urged to move to higher ground and avoid traveling through floodwaters. With the possibility of up to 3 inches of additional rain, flash flooding is expected to worsen, especially in locations near rivers and creeks.

Motorists are advised to remain cautious on flooded roadways, as local authorities work to monitor water levels. Flash flood alerts are subject to change, and further updates may be issued as conditions develop.
