Des Moines, Iowa – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 1 AM to noon CST Monday across portions of central and southeastern Iowa, as dangerously low wind chills move into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, wind chills are expected to fall to 20 to 25 degrees below zero as arctic air overspreads the state overnight. The advisory covers parts of central into southeastern Iowa, including the Des Moines metro and surrounding counties.

Cities included in the advisory area include Des Moines, Waukee, Norwalk, Indianola, Winterset, Perry, Adel, Knoxville, Pella, Oskaloosa, Albia, Chariton, Centerville, Corydon, Bloomfield, and Ottumwa.

The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to these wind chills could lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Cold conditions may be especially hazardous for people working outdoors, early-morning commuters, and those without adequate winter clothing.

Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, wear insulated layers, hats, and gloves, and ensure pets and livestock have adequate shelter from the cold. Travelers should use caution, allow extra time for morning commutes, and keep emergency supplies in vehicles in case of unexpected delays.

The advisory remains in effect through noon Monday, with gradual improvement expected later in the day as wind chills moderate.
