Iowa residents should prepare for severe winter weather as a strong storm brings heavy snow and damaging winds on Wednesday, March 5. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for central Iowa, including Des Moines, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo, as whiteout conditions and gusts up to 60 mph threaten travel and power lines.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, rain will transition to snow overnight Tuesday, becoming heavy by early Wednesday morning. Wind gusts over 60 mph will create dangerous blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile in some areas. Accumulations could reach 4 inches or more, making for hazardous road conditions, especially on Interstate 80 and Interstate 35.
Severe Travel Disruptions Expected
With strong winds and snow creating near-zero visibility, authorities urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel on Wednesday morning. Power outages are also likely due to falling tree limbs and downed power lines.
