Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Iowa on Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing strong winds and snowfall that could create blizzard conditions across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, rain will transition into snow Tuesday night, moving from northwest to southeast. Winds exceeding 60 mph are expected, significantly reducing visibility and creating hazardous travel conditions. Snow accumulation is projected to be between 2 to 5 inches, with heavier amounts possible near the Minnesota border.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for central, north-central, northeast, northwest, south-central, southwest, and west-central Iowa from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. The NWS warns that widespread blowing and drifting snow could create near-whiteout conditions, making travel treacherous, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute.

Officials advise residents to prepare for deteriorating road conditions, potential power outages, and tree damage due to high winds. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including blankets, flashlights, and extra food and water.

The storm is expected to weaken by late Wednesday morning as snowfall decreases and winds gradually subside. Travelers are urged to check road conditions and updates from the Iowa Department of Transportation before heading out.
