Des Moines, IA – A sharp blast of Arctic air will sweep through Iowa from November 28–30, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and the coldest air of the season through the Black Friday weekend. The setup threatens to slow post-holiday travel across much of the state, with significant snow accumulation possible in northern counties.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Des Moines and La Crosse, a moderate to high risk of heavy snow exists across northern and central Iowa late Friday through Saturday. Forecasters expect 5–10 inches across the north, from Mason City to Decorah, and 2–5 inches for the Des Moines metro. Gusty northwest winds of 25–35 mph will reduce visibility and cause blowing snow through early Sunday.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, icy and snow-covered roads are likely along I-35, U.S. 20, and I-80 between Des Moines and Iowa City. Travelers heading home or out for Black Friday shopping should expect delays and deteriorating conditions Friday night into Saturday morning.
Temperatures will plunge into the 20s during the day and teens at night, with wind chills near or below zero in northern counties. Residents are urged to prepare vehicles for winter travel, protect outdoor plumbing, and dress in layers if venturing outdoors.
