Des Moines, IA – A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for large portions of southern Iowa and northern Missouri through 10 p.m. Monday, with the National Weather Service warning of damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, the storm system is expected to impact areas primarily south of Interstate 80. Forecasts indicate potential wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph and hail as large as 2 inches in diameter.

Counties under the watch in Iowa include Adair, Adams, Appanoose, Cass, Clarke, Davis, Decatur, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Ringgold, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren, and Wayne. Missouri counties affected include Adair, Chariton, Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Macon, Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler, and Sullivan.

The NWS map highlights cities such as Osceola, Ottumwa, Centerville, and Creston in Iowa, and Brookfield, Kirksville, and Trenton in Missouri as being within the watch area. The region has a combined exposure of over 330,000 people, 247 schools, and 26 hospitals.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather, secure outdoor items, and monitor local alerts. Travelers should be cautious on roadways due to potentially hazardous conditions caused by strong winds and low visibility from heavy rain.

Storm conditions may evolve rapidly, and those in the affected regions are encouraged to remain weather-aware and have emergency plans ready in case warnings are issued.
