Quad Cities, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep across eastern Iowa and western Illinois overnight, bringing damaging winds, heavy rain, and possible large hail to cities along and south of Interstate 80 through 7 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in effect for much of the region, including the Quad Cities, Burlington, and Peoria. Storms will develop late Saturday evening and become more widespread by early Sunday, with movement eastward at 35 mph.

Communities such as Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Galesburg may see gusts topping 60 mph, isolated flash flooding, and intense lightning. While earlier activity may be scattered, coverage is expected to increase significantly toward dawn. Overnight travelers and early-morning commuters should remain alert for water-covered roads and wind-blown debris.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, keep phones charged, and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying areas prone to flash flooding. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” the NWS advised.

Severe weather risks will diminish after sunrise, but lingering showers may continue into Sunday morning. Additional alerts may be issued if storm intensity increases overnight.
