Inyo County, California – A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Inyo County’s higher elevations from late Sunday night through Wednesday evening, with heavy snow and strong winds expected to create hazardous travel conditions, especially along Highway 168.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, the watch covers the Eastern Sierra and White Mountains of Inyo County. Forecasters say snowfall totals could exceed 3 feet above 8,000 feet in the Eastern Sierra. Areas above 7,000 feet may see between 1.5 and 2.5 feet, with 8 to 16 inches possible down to 6,000 feet.
In the White Mountains, more than 2 feet of snow is possible above 8,000 feet, with 1 to 2 feet forecast above 7,000 feet and up to 14 inches down to 6,000 feet.
Wind gusts could reach 55 mph in the Sierra and 50 mph in the White Mountains. Blowing snow may reduce visibility below a quarter mile at times. Officials warn that slick roads and low visibility could make travel difficult to impossible, particularly on Highway 168 through Westgard Pass.
Strong winds may also cause tree damage and isolated power outages in exposed areas.
The National Weather Service advises residents and travelers to monitor updated forecasts as conditions may change over the next several days. The prolonged timing of this system could impact midweek travel and school commutes in mountain communities.
Motorists planning to cross higher elevations are urged to prepare for winter driving conditions and possible road closures.
