Chesterfield County, VA – The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office joined communities across Virginia on Tuesday in recognizing the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, highlighting the importance of expanding opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math.

According to the United Nations, February 11 marks the annual observance dedicated to promoting full and equal access to participation in science for women and girls worldwide. The day aims to break down barriers in STEM fields and encourage the next generation of innovators.

In a social media post shared Tuesday morning, the Sheriff’s Office celebrated “the brilliant minds breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation,” encouraging the community to uplift women in STEM and share stories of local role models. The post included a colorful graphic depicting women and a young student conducting laboratory experiments under the theme, “Breaking Barriers, Inspiring Innovation.”

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the U.N. General Assembly in 2015. Despite progress in recent years, women remain underrepresented in many STEM careers globally, according to international research groups.

Local schools and organizations across the Richmond metro area, including Chesterfield County, often use the day to spotlight STEM education programs, mentorship opportunities and career pathways for young women.

Community members are encouraged to recognize mentors, teachers and students pursuing careers in science and technology.
