International Falls, Minnesota – Life-threatening Arctic cold is set to intensify across far northern Minnesota beginning Wednesday night, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors and increasing the risk of frostbite in minutes. Residents across the Northland are urged to prepare now as wind chills plunge to extreme levels.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from Wednesday night through Thursday evening for Koochiching, northern St. Louis, and northern Cook and Lake counties. Wind chills are expected to fall as low as 42 below zero, with conditions becoming especially dangerous overnight and during the early morning hours.

Communities including International Falls, Ely, Isabella, and areas throughout Voyageurs National Park and the Boundary Waters will see the harshest cold. Even brief exposure could result in frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. The risk will be highest in open areas where wind accelerates heat loss.

An Extreme Cold Watch follows Thursday evening through Saturday morning, with wind chills potentially dropping as low as 50 below zero. Officials warn that additional cold weather alerts may be needed into early next week as the Arctic air mass remains locked in place.

Residents should avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, dress in multiple layers, and cover all exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face protection. Pets should be kept indoors, and frequent checks are encouraged for elderly neighbors and those without reliable heat. Dangerous cold is expected to persist through Saturday morning.
