Fairbanks, AK – Interior Alaska is bracing for a significant winter storm beginning Friday afternoon, with heavy snow expected to impact travel across the Yukon Flats, White Mountains, and high terrain south of the Yukon River through Sunday. The National Weather Service says the system will bring widespread snowfall during the Friday evening commute and continue into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches are expected from 3 p.m. Friday through noon Sunday. The highest amounts are likely from Chatanika northeast toward the White Mountains, including the Steese Highway summits.
Communities affected include Beaver, Fort Yukon, Circle, Venetie, Central, Livengood, and areas along the Steese Highway north of Milepost 124, the Dalton Highway from Milepost 0 to 38, and the Elliott Highway from Milepost 32 to 134. Forecasters warn that rapidly deteriorating road conditions may create difficult or dangerous driving, especially Friday evening as snow intensifies.
According to officials, motorists should be prepared for reduced visibility, slick surfaces, and accumulating snow on high-elevation corridors. Drivers traveling the Steese and Elliott Highways are urged to delay unnecessary travel and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, in case of delays or vehicle issues.
Road condition updates are available by calling 511.
