Caribou, ME – The US National Weather Service Caribou has issued a Special Weather Statement valid until 8:45 AM EST Thursday, warning of heavy snow showers moving across northern Piscataquis, northwestern Aroostook, and Somerset Counties.
At 7:41 AM, radar and satellite data detected a line of intense snow showers extending from northwest of Fort Kent to near Billy-Jack Depot, moving east at 25 mph.
Impacts:
- Winds: Gusts up to 25 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.
- Visibility: May drop to less than half a mile in the heaviest bands.
- Travel: Strongly discouraged during these bursts of snow. Rapidly changing road conditions could lead to slick, icy surfaces and poor visibility.
Motorists are urged to delay travel until snow showers pass and to slow down and allow extra time if on the road. Conditions can deteriorate rapidly during these intense winter bursts, especially on US Highway 1 near Fort Kent and State Highway 11 between Winterville and Fort Kent.
