San Bernardino, CA – Drivers across the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains are facing hazardous winter conditions today as a powerful storm continues dropping heavy wet snow across the region. The National Weather Service says impacts will be felt through Friday afternoon, with travel delays likely during the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, snow levels will hover near 5,500 to 6,000 feet early Friday, bringing accumulating snow to Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, and nearby communities. Forecasters expect 4 to 8 inches of snow between 6,000 and 7,000 feet, 7 to 11 inches between 7,000 and 7,500 feet, and as much as 12 to 16 inches above 7,500 feet by late Friday.
The storm is expected to weaken after 4 p.m. Friday, but scattered snow showers will continue Friday night into Saturday. An additional 2 to 5 inches of snow is possible during that period, potentially prolonging difficult travel conditions on mountain roads.
According to forecasters, the heavy, moisture-rich snow could make driving extremely difficult, especially on steep or winding routes leading into and out of mountain communities. The Friday morning commute is expected to be affected, with reduced visibility and slick roads likely. Officials urge travelers to delay trips when possible and to carry emergency supplies—including water, food, and a flashlight—if travel cannot be avoided.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to check Caltrans updates and dial 511 for statewide road conditions before heading out.
