San Bernardino, CA – A powerful early-season winter storm is expected to bring significant snowfall to the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains from Thursday morning through Saturday morning, prompting a Winter Storm Watch for elevations above 6,500 feet.

According to the National Weather Service, the system could deliver 2 to 6 inches of snow near 6,500 feet, 6 to 12 inches between 7,000 and 8,000 feet, and as much as 12 to 18 inches above 8,000 feet. The heaviest snowfall is projected Thursday afternoon through early Friday morning.

Forecasters warn that travel conditions may quickly deteriorate as the storm arrives. Roads—and especially bridges and mountain passes—are expected to become slick and hazardous. The NWS reports that travel could become “very difficult to impossible,” particularly during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commute periods. Drivers heading toward Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, and nearby recreation areas should prepare for extended delays, chain requirements, and potential road closures.

The storm’s timing is expected to impact both local commuters and holiday travelers heading into the weekend. Officials advise residents and visitors to monitor updated forecasts and consider delaying nonessential travel during the peak of the storm.

Temperatures will fall sharply across the higher elevations Thursday night, increasing the risk of icy conditions even in areas that receive lighter snowfall. The NWS urges motorists to use extreme caution and to carry emergency supplies, including blankets, water, and tire chains.

More updates are expected Thursday as forecasters refine snow totals and timing.
