Alaiedon Township, MI – Drivers in southern Ingham County faced unexpected delays Monday morning after two vehicles struck cows on Okemos Road, causing one vehicle to flip into a ditch and prompting a temporary road closure.
According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 6:45 a.m. Monday to Okemos Road near Harper Road for reports of vehicles hitting livestock in the roadway.
Authorities said a northbound vehicle driven by a 66-year-old woman from Mason struck a cow and a calf that were in the road. The driver was not injured.
Shortly afterward, a southbound vehicle driven by an 81-year-old woman from Holt struck the deceased cow still in the roadway. Police say the impact caused her vehicle to flip and land on its roof in a ditch.
The Mason Fire Department responded to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the driver. She was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to officials.
Okemos Road was closed for approximately one hour Monday morning while emergency crews worked the scene and removed the vehicle. The roadway later reopened to traffic.
The City of Mason Government Police Department and Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter also assisted with the response.
Officials did not immediately say how the cows came to be in the roadway. Drivers in rural areas are reminded to remain alert for animals, especially during early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
