CROWN POINT, Ind. — A Crown Point woman is proving that age is no barrier to service, as she continues volunteering at a local hospital after turning 100 years old.

Vivian Kelby, who marked her centennial birthday on May 4, has logged more than 38,000 volunteer hours at Franciscan Health Crown Point. According to hospital officials, she still reports for her shift every Friday afternoon at the hospital’s gift shop, a role she’s embraced for nearly five decades.

Kelby began her volunteer journey in January 1976 at the former St. Anthony Home, now part of Franciscan Health. Over the years, she’s contributed her time in numerous departments including admissions, information and imaging, and also mentored youth volunteers.

“She’s an inspiration, still volunteering every week at 100 years old,” said Justin Dougherty, Manager of Volunteer Services at Franciscan Health Crown Point. “Her sharp mind, quick wit and unwavering dedication remind us all of the power of purpose and service.”

Kelby, a mother of four and grandmother to more than 60 descendants, credits her long-term commitment to enjoying the work and the people. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t enjoy it,” she said. “It keeps me young.”

She encourages others to follow her lead, saying, “You’ll make friends and have a lot of fun.”

Franciscan Health supports nearly 200 volunteers across its Northwest Indiana facilities in Crown Point, Dyer, Michigan City and Munster. More information about volunteer opportunities is available at franciscanhealth.org/community/volunteer.
