Indianapolis, IN – A 66-year-old woman tragically died in a house fire early Sunday morning on East 19th Street. The fire broke out around 4:08 a.m. in a double residence, with alert passers-by credited for the successful evacuation of a family of four from one side of the home. The adults who discovered the fire spotted flames through a window and immediately called 911. They then attempted to alert the occupants by pounding on doors and windows. In the process, a female passer-by suffered a slight injury when a window broke and cut her hand.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the unburned side of the home was occupied by a family of four who quickly evacuated. Unfortunately, the other side, occupied by the elderly woman, was fully engulfed in flames, and she did not survive. This marks the fourth fire fatality in the IFD service district for 2024. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter to the family of four.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
