Indianapolis, Indiana – Bitter cold continues to clamp down on central Indiana early Tuesday, with dangerous wind chills well below zero creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors during the morning hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for the northern two-thirds of central Indiana through 9 a.m. Wind chills have already dropped below zero and could sink as low as 12 degrees below zero before easing later this morning. The advisory covers much of the region north of Bloomington, including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, and surrounding counties.
Exposure to the cold can lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Officials urge residents to wear multiple layers, limit time outdoors, and bring pets inside. Drivers are also advised to keep emergency supplies in vehicles and check on elderly neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the cold.
Beyond the immediate cold, forecasters are tracking a potential winter weather system expected to move through the U.S. this weekend. While details are still evolving, confidence is high that temperatures will remain well below normal across Indiana. The best chance for heavier snow currently appears south of central Indiana, though conditions could still shift.
Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect through Tuesday morning, and additional updates or winter alerts may be issued as the weekend system becomes clearer.
