Indianapolis, Indiana – Heavy rain is already causing trouble across western and southwestern Indiana as more than 2 inches have fallen today, putting many roads and low-lying areas at risk for flooding through Monday evening. According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, repeated showers and thunderstorms will continue to train over the same areas, leading to the potential for additional localized and areal flooding tonight. Flood watches are in effect for portions of Vigo, Sullivan, Greene, and Owen counties, where rapid water rises could shut down roads and create dangerous driving conditions.
Emergency officials warn residents not to drive through flooded roadways, stressing the importance of heeding any barricades or closures. Some local schools and businesses may see early dismissals or closures if flooding worsens. Drivers on I-70 and U.S. 41 should be especially cautious as ponding water may develop quickly with additional rainfall.
The threat of flooding will continue into Tuesday morning, with more showers possible overnight. Stay alert for additional advisories, and keep emergency alerts active on your phone for any rapid changes in conditions.
