Indianapolis, Ind. – Central Indiana kicks off September with sunshine and highs near 80, but a shift to stormy, cooler weather is on the horizon by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, scattered thunderstorms are likely Wednesday with a 70 to 80 percent chance of rain across much of the state. Showers may bring heavy downpours and brief lightning delays to the morning and evening commute. A cold front trailing the system will drop daytime highs from the low 80s on Wednesday to the upper 60s by Thursday.

Drivers along I-70 and I-65 should expect slick pavement and reduced visibility during storms. Cooler air behind the front may also produce brisk evenings, with lows dipping into the 40s by Thursday night. Residents are urged to prepare for a noticeable drop in temperatures, especially those attending outdoor school or sports events.

Relief arrives by Friday, when drier skies and seasonable highs in the mid-70s return. Sunshine is expected to dominate the first weekend of September, making for more comfortable outdoor conditions.

More advisories are possible if storms Wednesday intensify.
