Indianapolis, Indiana – A rapid warmup is underway across central Indiana today, but gusty winds and dry air are creating an elevated fire risk through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures will climb into the mid-60s to near 70 today before rising further into the low to mid-70s Thursday. Winds will increase through the day, with gusts reaching 20 to 30 mph, especially during the afternoon hours.
The combination of breezy conditions and relative humidity dropping to around 30 percent is raising concerns for fire spread across dry grasses and fields. Areas along I-70 and I-65, including Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Bloomington, may see conditions where fires can ignite and spread quickly.
By late Thursday, the pattern begins to shift as moisture returns to the region. Rain chances increase Thursday night into Friday, which could help reduce fire concerns but may lead to wet roadways for the Friday commute.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning today and secure loose objects that could be blown around by gusty winds. Additional updates are expected as rain chances increase heading into the end of the week.
