Indianapolis, IN – Strong thunderstorms are expected to move into central Indiana within hours, bringing the risk of damaging winds and dangerous lightning during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a slight risk for severe storms now includes much of central Indiana, with storms expected to arrive from Illinois around 6 p.m. and push east into Ohio by midnight. The primary threat is damaging wind gusts, with additional risks for large hail and a brief, isolated tornado.

Indianapolis, Muncie, Terre Haute, and Bloomington sit within the highest risk zone, where storms could intensify quickly as they track east. Heavy rainfall may also lead to localized flooding on roadways, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas during peak travel hours.

Drivers should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding on roads during the evening commute. Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive warnings as storms develop.

The severe threat will taper after midnight as storms exit into Ohio, but additional updates and warnings are likely as conditions evolve through the evening.
