Indianapolis, IN – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis is warning of potential fire danger across portions of central and north-central Indiana today, as dry air and gusty winds combine to create hazardous conditions.
Forecasters say mild afternoon highs in the low to mid-60s will be accompanied by relative humidity values as low as 15–25% and south winds gusting 20–30 mph. These conditions can cause fires to spread rapidly if ignited, particularly in grassy or open areas.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, check for local fire restrictions, and refrain from driving or parking vehicles on dry vegetation. Chains on trailers should also be inspected to prevent sparks.
According to the NWS, the elevated fire risk is expected to persist through late Tuesday afternoon before easing overnight as humidity levels rise and winds decrease.
