Indianapolis, Ind. – Storm chances return to Central Indiana tonight as a cold front sweeps across the region, dropping temperatures from the mid-80s today into the low 70s by Thursday. Commuters could face wet roads during the evening and overnight hours as showers and thunderstorms move through.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, scattered thunderstorms will develop late tonight as the front pushes south. While widespread severe weather is not expected, locally heavy rain and brief gusty winds could impact travel, especially along I-65 and I-70.

The bigger change arrives with the air behind the front. Highs will tumble into the low 70s Thursday and stay in that range into Friday. Residents across Marion, Hamilton, and Boone counties can expect a much cooler, breezy stretch heading into the weekend. Sunshine returns Friday, but temperatures will remain well below early September averages.

Officials urge drivers to use caution during downpours and avoid flooded intersections. Outdoor plans for Thursday should include light jackets or layers as cooler air settles in.

The weather service says conditions will stabilize into the weekend, but another round of unsettled weather may arrive early next week.
