Indianapolis, Indiana – A sharp cold front moving through central Indiana today will bring a rapid temperature drop, gusty winds, and scattered snow showers, making it feel much colder by late afternoon and evening across the Indianapolis metro.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures that started the morning in the low to mid-40s will fall steadily through the day as the cold front pushes south. Northwest winds will increase this afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph, pulling much colder air into the region.
Scattered snow showers are expected to develop this afternoon, with minor accumulations ranging from a dusting to around one inch in spots. While widespread heavy snow is not anticipated, brief bursts could reduce visibility and create slick patches on roads, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces during the evening commute.
By late afternoon, temperatures across Indianapolis and surrounding counties are expected to fall into the 20s, with wind chills dropping sharply into the teens and even single digits by early evening. Areas north and west of the city, including Lafayette, Crawfordsville, and Kokomo, could experience the coldest wind chills first as the front moves through.
The combination of falling temperatures, gusty winds, and snow showers may lead to minor travel impacts across central Indiana. Drivers are urged to slow down during snow bursts and watch for sudden changes in road conditions. Residents should dress in multiple layers, limit time outdoors if possible, and bring pets inside as temperatures continue to fall.
Conditions are expected to turn colder but drier tonight as snow showers taper off. Wind chills will remain bitter through the evening hours, and additional updates may be issued if snow coverage or wind impacts increase later today.
