Indianapolis Weather Alert: Heavy Snow Bands Impact I-70 & I-69 Early Today

Heavy snow continues to fall across central Indiana this morning, turning highways into slick ribbons of white and slowing travel across much of the region. Bands of heavier snow are persisting east of I-69 and south of I-70, where visibility has dropped to around half a mile in the most intense areas.

The National Weather Service in Indianapolis reports that these snow bands are producing bursts of moderate to heavy snowfall, creating rapid changes in visibility and quick accumulation on untreated roads. Even brief lulls can be deceptive — the next band can move in within minutes, instantly reducing visibility and re-covering plowed surfaces.

Drivers along Interstate 70 between Indianapolis and Richmond and I-74 toward Cincinnati should expect slick and snow-covered stretches through mid-morning. Some areas near Greensburg, Shelbyville, and Franklin are seeing persistent snow that’s coating roadways despite salting efforts.

Meteorologists warn that road conditions will remain hazardous through late morning, particularly where snow continues under the heavier bands. Winds are light, but cold surface temperatures mean snow is sticking efficiently to both rural routes and city streets.

Commuters are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use headlights when visibility drops below one mile. Even small adjustments in speed can prevent collisions in these variable conditions.

The snow is expected to taper by early afternoon as the system shifts southeast, though patchy slick spots and refreezing are likely tonight as temperatures fall back into the 20s.
