Indianapolis, Indiana – Relentless heat is pushing Indiana into dangerous territory as a statewide Heat Advisory remains in effect through Thursday, with heat index values soaring above 105° and possible spikes as high as 110° in central Indiana.
According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis, peak heat indices will exceed 105° across portions of western and central Indiana on Wednesday, expanding to cover nearly all of central Indiana by Thursday. These oppressive conditions are expected to persist, with “feels-like” temperatures near or above 100° continuing into the weekend and early next week.
Cities including Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette, and Terre Haute are all under the advisory. Residents should limit outdoor activities, especially between noon and 7 p.m., wear light, loose-fitting clothing, and stay hydrated. Vulnerable groups—such as young children, seniors, and those without access to air conditioning—should take extra precautions. Major highways like I-65, I-69, and I-70 will see increased risks for heat-related incidents, and local agencies urge neighbors to check in on one another.
This is Indiana’s most intense summer heat wave so far, with similar heat not seen since July 2022. The advisory could be extended if conditions persist, and additional warnings are possible later this week.
Warnings remain in effect for most of Indiana through Thursday, with updates possible if the extreme heat lingers.
