Indianapolis, Ind. – Central Indiana faces one of its hottest stretches of the summer this weekend, with heat indices climbing to 105 degrees and little overnight relief. Sunday is expected to be the most oppressive day, prompting health officials to urge residents to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, temperatures will feel like 95 to 100 degrees on Friday, rising to between 100 and 105 degrees by Sunday. A cold front will approach Tuesday, bringing a growing risk for thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday. Gusty winds, heavy downpours, and lightning are possible ahead of the front, followed by a noticeable drop in temperatures.
The heat will remain a safety concern through Monday, with heat indices still reaching near 104. Residents should take frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors.
Cooler, less humid weather is expected by Wednesday, but more storms could develop if the front slows.
