Indianapolis, Indiana – Heat index values could reach a sweltering 105°F across much of central and southern Indiana through 8 p.m. Saturday, prompting an extended heat advisory and urgent health warnings.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, dangerously hot and humid conditions will persist across a broad swath of the state, including Marion, Vigo, Monroe, Shelby, and Knox counties. The advisory spans 29 counties in all, affecting cities from Indianapolis to Terre Haute, Bloomington, and Seymour.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, especially between noon and 6 p.m., when heat stress is highest. Vulnerable groups — including children, seniors, and those without reliable air conditioning — face elevated risks of heat exhaustion or stroke.

Cooling centers are open in major cities including Indianapolis, Columbus, and Vincennes. Local emergency services advise checking on neighbors and avoiding strenuous tasks during peak heat. Drivers should never leave children or pets in vehicles, even briefly.

Saturday marks the third consecutive day of excessive heat for the region — conditions not seen in some areas since July 2020. Relief is expected late Saturday as a cold front moves through, possibly bringing storms.

Heat alerts remain in effect until 8 p.m. Saturday, with updates expected by early Sunday.
