Indianapolis, IN – A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection with the September 30, 2025, fatal shooting of 38-year-old William Deaton II, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).
Just after 4 p.m. on September 30, officers from IMPD’s Northwest District responded to the 5200 block of Austral Drive on a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they found Deaton suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
Witnesses told police the suspect fled moments before officers arrived. IMPD’s K9 and SWAT units assisted in the search but were unable to locate him at that time.
According to IMPD homicide detectives, the shooting reportedly began after a female acquaintance met with a male who became aggressive and allegedly pointed a gun at her. Detectives believe Deaton tried to help the woman when the suspect, later identified as a 17-year-old, allegedly fired multiple shots, fatally striking Deaton.
After collecting witness statements, video footage, and forensic evidence, investigators identified the teen as the suspect. On October 20, 2025, IMPD’s Violent Crimes Unit located and arrested him without incident.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and determine final charges. Police emphasized that the charges are preliminary and that the suspect remains innocent until proven guilty.
