Indianapolis, Indiana – Gunfire erupted just before 8 p.m. Wednesday when officers responding to a reported shooting came under fire, leading to an officer-involved shooting on the city’s southwest side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 1200 block of West Sumner Avenue and found an adult man outside with a graze wound to his neck. As officers began rendering aid, a suspect inside a nearby home opened fire from an upstairs window, forcing at least one officer to return fire.

Police said additional information indicated a child may have been inside the home, prompting officers to enter the residence to secure the scene. Officers safely escorted two adults and two children out of the home, all reported unharmed.

Inside, officers located an adult male believed to be the shooter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. The initial victim with the neck wound was hospitalized in stable condition.
