Indianapolis, IN – Detectives with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) have arrested the final suspect in a months-long murder investigation stemming from a deadly January shooting.
According to IMPD, 23-year-old Malachi Wells was arrested on November 3, 2025, by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit on an active murder warrant. The case dates back to January 25, 2025, when officers responded to reports of shots fired on the 4900 block of Primrose Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite medical aid, the victim was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Following a lengthy investigation, detectives—working alongside the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office—identified multiple suspects. The recent arrest occurred at a gas station on Southeastern Avenue, where Wells was taken into custody without incident. Police say he was allegedly found with a handgun and marijuana at the time of his arrest.
Another man, Derreck Phillips, was also arrested at the scene for possession of marijuana. Two other suspects, Alexis Hawkins and Brian Winston, had been previously apprehended in connection with the case.
Authorities emphasize that all charges are accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
