Indianapolis, Indiana – Strong winds continued across central Indiana Monday as a Wind Advisory remained in effect through 5 p.m., bringing hazardous travel conditions and the risk of blowing debris.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, peak wind gusts of 40 to more than 50 mph were expected to persist through midday before gradually diminishing later in the afternoon and evening. The strongest winds were reported during the morning hours, particularly along and north of Interstate 70.
In Indianapolis, forecast data showed maximum wind gusts reaching 48 mph, while surrounding cities experienced similar or stronger conditions. Kokomo, Lafayette, and Muncie each recorded or forecast gusts up to 51 mph, making them among the most impacted locations. Terre Haute and Bloomington saw gusts in the mid- to upper-40 mph range.
The National Weather Service warned that driving may be difficult for high-profile vehicles, including trucks, vans, and SUVs, especially on open roadways and north–south routes where crosswinds are strongest. Motorists were urged to maintain firm control of steering wheels and reduce speed when encountering sudden gusts.
Additional impacts include loose objects and holiday decorations being blown around, which could create roadway hazards or cause minor property damage. While widespread outages were not specifically noted, forecasters cautioned that isolated power disruptions remain possible if tree limbs are damaged.
Wind gusts are expected to slowly weaken later Monday afternoon, though breezy conditions may continue into the evening hours.
Commuters, delivery drivers, and outdoor workers were most affected during the morning and early afternoon, when gusts were strongest. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items and continue monitoring official updates from the National Weather Service until winds fully subside.
