Indiana – Umbrellas twist in gusty winds and thunder echoes across central Indiana as storms sweep into the Indianapolis area this morning. Drivers already face wet pavement and bursts of heavy rain, while stronger storms could intensify quickly through the late morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, thunderstorms expanding from the west may produce damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes across central Indiana. The most active window runs from early morning through late morning as the first round of storms crosses the region.

Heavy rainfall could also trigger localized flash flooding in low-lying neighborhoods and poor-drainage streets. Drivers should slow down on I-65, I-70, and I-465 where sudden downpours may reduce visibility and create ponding on the roadway.

Wind remains a major concern even outside storms. A Wind Advisory remains in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. across central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Greenwood, and Muncie. Southwest winds between 15 and 25 mph may gust as high as 50 mph.

Loose outdoor items can easily blow around during the strongest gusts. Tree limbs could break, and scattered power outages are possible. Charge phones early and secure trash bins, patio furniture, and lightweight decorations.

Meteorologists say another round of scattered storms may redevelop across southern sections of central Indiana later today. Damaging wind gusts remain the main threat during the afternoon hours.

Conditions quiet down afterward as cooler air moves in. Sunshine returns Thursday with calmer winds, followed by a breezy but brighter pattern heading into Friday. Spring warmth should slowly build again into the weekend.

Traveling for spring break later this week? Expect better driving conditions after storms clear.
