Indianapolis, Indiana – Bitter cold will continue across central Indiana tonight, with wind chills dropping below zero and creating potentially hazardous conditions for anyone traveling or spending time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits above and below zero, with minimum wind chills between -15 and 0 degrees. Officials urge residents to bundle up if heading out tonight, noting that exposed skin can be affected quickly under these conditions.
Tuesday will remain cold, with forecast highs ranging from 21 to 30 degrees, followed by another chilly night with lows between 15 and 25 degrees. Wind chills Tuesday night are expected to dip into the single digits and teens, though not as extreme as tonight.
A brief break from the cold arrives Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 30s to mid-40s. The NWS notes that light precipitation is possible during the day, which could create wet road conditions before colder air returns later in the week.
Overnight cold combined with lingering moisture could lead to slick spots on roadways, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces. Motorists traveling on Interstate 65, Interstate 70, Interstate 74, and major arterial roads should use caution during late-night and early-morning hours.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that while a modest warmup is expected midweek, cold air will return, and residents should continue monitoring forecast updates. Drivers, early-morning commuters, and students should allow extra travel time during periods of extreme cold and watch for icy patches, especially during overnight lows.
Officials also remind residents to dress in layers, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready during this stretch of cold weather.
