Indianapolis, IN – A developing weekend storm may bring widespread accumulating snow to central Indiana starting late Friday night, with difficult travel possible across the Indianapolis metro, Lafayette, Muncie, and Terre Haute through Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Indianapolis office, a Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for much of central, north-central, and west-central Indiana. Snow is expected to arrive after midnight Friday and may intensify early Saturday as colder air funnels south. Forecasters note considerable uncertainty along the I-70 corridor, where temperatures near freezing could influence totals and lead to rapid fluctuations between wet and powdery snow. Areas north of I-70, including Lafayette, Kokomo, Frankfort, and Muncie, currently hold the highest odds for 3 to 7 inches.

According to INDOT officials, weekend travel could slow significantly on I-65, I-69, I-70, and U.S. 231 as bands of heavier snow reduce visibility and create slick stretches. Early Saturday and again pre-dawn Sunday appear to be the highest-impact windows. Crews are preparing pretreatment operations, but wet-to-snow transitions may cause brief periods of slush before surfaces freeze.

According to county emergency managers, residents should monitor forecast updates, especially those with Saturday events or Sunday return travel after the holiday. Drivers should carry winter kits, check tire tread, and allow extra stopping distance. Homeowners should plan for shoveling or plowing early Saturday and again Sunday if the storm redevelops over the region. Power outages are not expected to be widespread, but brief issues could occur where heavier bands form.
