Indianapolis, Indiana – Heavy snow continues to fall across central Indiana this afternoon, keeping roads slick and hazardous as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through midnight tonight.

Several rounds of snow have already impacted the region, with an additional 2 to 5 inches expected before the system exits late tonight. Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood, Plainfield, and Anderson remain under the warning, along with much of west central and east central Indiana. Delaware and Randolph counties, including Muncie and Winchester, could see totals on the higher end of that range.

According to the National Weather Service office in Indianapolis, steady snowfall will persist through the evening hours before tapering near or shortly after midnight. Snowfall rates may briefly increase at times, leading to rapidly deteriorating road conditions. Untreated streets, bridges, and overpasses are especially slick, and visibility may be reduced during heavier bursts of snow.

Indiana Department of Transportation crews continue plowing and treating major routes including I-65, I-69, I-70, I-74, and I-465, but snow-covered lanes and slow travel are expected into the late evening. Secondary roads and residential streets may remain snow-packed well into Sunday morning.

Officials strongly encourage drivers to avoid non-essential travel tonight. If travel cannot be postponed, motorists should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight. According to state officials, the latest road conditions are available by dialing 511.

Snow will come to an end overnight, but lingering slick spots are expected Sunday morning as temperatures remain below freezing. Cleanup efforts may continue into the day, especially in areas that see heavier totals.
