INDIANAPOLIS – A blustery, rain-soaked weekend is underway across central Indiana, with widespread rainfall and gusty winds expected to peak late tonight through Sunday. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis reports that 1 to 2 inches of rain are likely across much of the region, with locally higher totals where thunderstorms develop.

According to the NWS Indianapolis office, isolated strong storms could form late Saturday into early Sunday, bringing damaging wind gusts as the primary hazard. Wind speeds will steadily increase overnight, with gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph by Sunday morning across Indianapolis, Lafayette, Muncie, and Terre Haute.

Periods of heavy rain will continue through Sunday afternoon before tapering off early Monday. The combination of soaked ground and high winds could down small branches or cause minor power outages, especially in rural and wooded areas.

Drivers should use extra caution on I-65, I-70, and I-69, where ponding and gusty crosswinds could make travel challenging. Residents are advised to secure outdoor decorations and trash bins ahead of the wind surge and avoid flooded roadways. Cooler, calmer weather is expected to return early in the new week.
