Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers and utility crews across central Indiana faced an unusual early-season heat spike by mid-afternoon Monday as temperatures surged to 83°F, pushing cooling demand higher and catching many off guard during what is typically a milder stretch.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the temperature officially reached 83°F at 1:49 p.m., breaking the previous record of 82°F set in 1907. The rapid climb occurred under strong sunshine and southerly winds, accelerating warming across much of the state before the late-day hours.

The heat extended beyond Indianapolis into cities like Lafayette, Bloomington, and Muncie, where temperatures climbed into the upper 70s and low 80s. Increased air conditioning use led to a noticeable uptick in electricity demand, particularly between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., when grid usage typically peaks. Road crews and outdoor workers adjusted schedules to limit exposure during the hottest part of the day.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid prolonged outdoor activity during peak heating hours. Vehicles can heat rapidly, so officials urge drivers not to leave children or pets unattended.

Temperatures are expected to ease slightly after sunset, but above-average warmth will linger into the next day, with additional updates possible if new records are approached.
