Indianapolis, Ind. – Central Indiana commuters will see improving road conditions this afternoon, but another winter system is lining up to impact I-65, I-70 and I-465 by late Saturday night into Sunday.

Light snow or rain showers early Thursday will taper off, allowing temperatures to climb into the upper 40s to near 50 degrees by mid-afternoon. That rebound will help dry main highways, though damp pavement may linger on shaded bridges and overpasses.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, warmer weather will continue Friday and into Saturday before another winter system approaches Saturday night and Sunday. While specific snow or ice totals are not yet defined, forecasters are monitoring the potential for accumulating precipitation as colder air filters back into the state.

Highs Friday could push well into the 50s across much of central Indiana, accelerating any remaining snowmelt. However, temperatures will trend downward late Saturday, increasing the chance that precipitation falls as snow or a rain-snow mix after 8 p.m. Saturday.

If pavement temperatures drop into the upper 20s to low 30s by early Sunday, elevated stretches of I-70 on the east side and I-65 north of downtown could become slick before sunrise. Portions of I-74 and US-31 may also see reduced traction during heavier bursts.

Drivers should monitor updated forecasts, especially if traveling late Saturday or early Sunday. The next clearer picture on timing and impacts is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours as the weekend system approaches.
