Indianapolis, Indiana – Drivers across central Indiana should prepare for repeated rounds of rain and thunderstorms beginning Wednesday, with heavier downpours capable of slowing traffic along I-65 and I-70 by late afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, a warming trend will push temperatures into the 60s midweek and into the low to mid-70s by Friday. That surge in warmth will fuel daily rain chances, with thunderstorms likely at times through the end of the week.

Showers will develop in waves, and some storms could produce heavy rainfall rates that reduce visibility below one mile. The Thursday evening commute along I-465 and I-69 may be impacted first, with additional rounds expected Friday afternoon and evening as a stronger system moves through. Localized ponding on roadways and minor flooding in low-lying areas will be possible where storms repeatedly track over the same counties.

By Friday, highs may reach the mid to upper 70s in Indianapolis, Bloomington and Kokomo. Thunderstorms during peak heating could bring frequent lightning and brief wind gusts topping 40 mph.

Residents are urged to monitor alerts throughout the week and move indoors when thunder is heard. Allow extra travel time during heavier rain, avoid driving through water-covered roads and secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty storms.

Rain chances continue into Saturday before gradually tapering, with additional updates expected as timing and rainfall totals become clearer.
