Indianapolis, Indiana – Dangerously cold conditions continue across central Indiana today as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect, followed by a prolonged stretch of bitter wind chills through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. today, with wind chills as low as -20 degrees reported across parts of the region. After the warning expires, a Cold Weather Advisory will take effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 11 a.m. Wednesday, extending the period of hazardous cold.

Forecasters warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Actual air temperatures remain well below freezing, while persistent winds continue to drive wind chill values into dangerous territory.

Communities impacted include Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Muncie, Crawfordsville, Shelbyville, Bloomington, Terre Haute, and surrounding areas. The coldest apparent temperatures are expected during overnight and early morning hours, especially along major travel corridors such as Interstate 65, Interstate 70, Interstate 74, Interstate 465, and U.S. Highway 31.

While widespread snow is not the primary concern today, the extreme cold may affect vehicles, reduce battery performance, and create dangerous conditions for anyone stranded or working outdoors. Bridges and open roadways can feel significantly colder due to wind exposure.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, hats, and gloves, and ensure all exposed skin is covered. The National Weather Service also recommends bringing pets indoors, checking on elderly neighbors, and using space heaters safely.

Students, early-shift workers, and commuters traveling before sunrise may face the greatest risk, particularly in open or rural areas.

Forecasters say bitterly cold conditions are expected to persist through the remainder of the week, with only gradual improvement. Residents are encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts and advisories as the cold pattern remains firmly in place.
